Our Mission
The Center for News, Technology & Innovation (CNTI), an independent global research center, seeks to encourage independent, sustainable media, maintain an open internet and foster informed public policy conversations.
An independent press and an open internet must remain at the center of public debate because they are essential to the future of free and functioning societies.
These issues are not confined to any single country or sector; they are global in scope and demand research, evidence, and critical thinking to be addressed effectively. CNTI does not claim to have all the answers, but we provide a framework for asking the right questions and building a path toward solutions. By grounding our work in rigorous analysis and diverse perspectives, we help ensure that conversations about media and technology stay focused on strengthening democratic values.
To advance this mission, CNTI presents each issue area as a series of critical questions that cut across journalism, technology, and policy. We assess the current state of each issue, drawing on both original and collaborative research to highlight emerging trends and pressing challenges.
Just as importantly, we convene cross-industry thought leaders for evidence-based discussions that generate actionable insights. Through this combination of inquiry, research, and dialogue, CNTI fosters a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities shaping our digital information environment.
What Makes CNTI Distinct?
Cross-Industry Structure
At CNTI’s foundation is a broad network of independent, multi-disciplinary experts in news, technology, public policy, and research who are deeply committed to addressing complex global challenges.
Our team is motivated by the potential consequences of inaction and driven by the belief that independent media and an open internet are essential for creating informed citizens. These principles, in turn, reinforce the democratic values that sustain open societies, ensuring transparency, accountability, and access to reliable information.
Where challenges arise, we approach them collaboratively, valuing each member’s expertise, diverse perspectives, and constructive differences. This spirit of teamwork and mutual respect guides every aspect of our work, enhancing both the quality and reach of our impact.
By working together, we are better positioned to develop innovative solutions and meaningful initiatives. Learn more about our current board members and advisors from around the world.

Global Outlook
Media and technology-related policy in one country can have significant ripple effects in many others, influencing everything from market practices to human rights protections. For that reason, CNTI approaches internet policy with a global lens.
The most intense pressure points of any issue—whether freedom of expression, data privacy, or platform accountability—shift not only over time but also across national contexts. A law passed in one jurisdiction can quickly become a model, precedent, or cautionary tale for others.
Policymakers, advocates, and industry leaders must therefore recognize that debates within a single country rarely stay confined to its borders. Understanding the cross-border consequences of regulation is critical to shaping policies that strengthen, rather than fragment, the global internet.
To support this broader perspective, CNTI provides tools such as our Aggregated Country Data and Issue Primers, which track legislative activity worldwide and highlight patterns, trends, and emerging areas of concern.

Comprehensive Approach
CNTI recognizes the breadth, interconnectedness, and complexity of the issues shaping today’s digital information environment. Questions about freedom of expression, access to reliable news, platform accountability, and the role of technology in civic life are deeply intertwined.
The challenges cross borders and sectors, touching governments, industry, media, and citizens alike. Addressing them requires moving beyond narrow fixes to see how each decision reverberates across the broader ecosystem.
That is why CNTI embraces a comprehensive approach to strengthening an independent press and protecting an open internet. We connect insights from journalism, policy, technology, and research to better understand the full picture and to develop solutions that can endure.
By engaging experts across disciplines and geographies, CNTI works to surface emerging risks, highlight opportunities for collaboration, and build strategies that support democratic values in the digital age.

Accessibility
CNTI’s digital resources—including event summaries, research reports, issue primers, and aggregated data—are designed to be practical, comprehensive, and accessible to a wide audience.
Each Issue Primer dives into the scope of a topic, highlighting key research findings, legislative debates, and global events that shape the conversation. By presenting information in a structured and digestible way, these resources help users quickly understand complex issues and their broader context.
In addition, CNTI emphasizes subject-matter experts, synthesizes essential takeaways, and provides curated links for deeper exploration through reading, watching, or listening.
All sources are fully transparent, ensuring trust, rigor, and credibility. This approach allows users to engage confidently with the material and supports informed discussion and decision-making.

Digital safety for journalists must be addressed at multiple levels: by governments, technology companies, publishers, and researchers. Progress will require dedication and cooperation.”
— Amy Mitchell, Executive Director, CNTI
CNTI tackles the complex, interconnected challenges of today’s digital information ecosystem by combining insights from journalism, policy, technology and research. Working with experts across disciplines and geographies, we identify risks, foster collaboration and develop strategies that support an independent press and an open internet.
AI & Journalism
AI provides new reporting, investigative and operational tools for journalism. It also exacerbates challenges like disinformation, copyright abuse and job stability. CNTI’s work examines both the opportunities and challenges AI brings to the field in order to shape newsroom leaders and policymakers’ understanding.
Information Integrity
Trustworthy, verifiable and diverse news sources are essential to the function of a democracy. The continued broadening of our digital information space and advancements in AI, however, have expanded the speed and scale of disinformation, creating a need for new verification mechanisms. CNTI’s work delves into the threats of disinformation and explores ways to advance information integrity that safeguard an independent media and public expression.
Journalist Safety
New tools are emerging to help keep journalists and their sources safe, but emerging technologies have also exposed journalists to new forms of harassment and abuse. CNTI’s work probes the ways technology can be used to both aid and harm and provides insight into ways the news industry and policymakers can improve journalists’ safety.
Media Sustainability & Relevance
In the face of an evolving financial, technological and political landscape, journalism producers must grapple with both how to survive financially and how to ensure its services meet the needs of its audience — all while maintaining editorial independence. CNTI’s work explores how new business strategies, technology, government regulations and content ideas could impact journalism’s future.
Press Freedom
An independent press and an open internet are critical to the future of functioning, free societies. However, press freedom is facing unprecedented threats around the world. CNTI offers new research and first-person insights into the challenges journalists face and the steps they are taking to continue to bring truth to light.
